    ‘Tis the season for local.

    ‘Tis the season for local.

As John F. Kennedy once said, “A rising tide lifts all the boats.”

Did you know that the survival rate of a small business is very small? Out of the hundreds of thousands of small business that are started each year in the United States, 50% of them will not make it to year five and of those that do, 70% will not celebrate a 10th anniversary. Early mornings, late nights, and a lot of worry, sweat, and tears go into curating the perfect shopping, dining, and gathering experience for us all. I don’t write this to bring dark clouds to this bright holiday season, but instead to bring awareness to what it takes to keep our Columbia vibrant, delicious, and unique.

Turn the pages of this issue and be invited into the wonderful world of holiday gifting and giving, elegant event planning, and through the front doors of our state into the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion. You’ll find everything from the most fabulous outfits for our busy Soda City social calendar to divine restaurants to gather with family and friends. Discover a diverse list
(we wish we could include everyone!) of local nonprofits that you can volunteer with or make a donation to—take a moment this season to give back to those who need it the most and who will ensure your donation leaves a lasting impact. We’re grateful for the entrepreneurs, makers, creatives, and those in our community who continually link arms with us to make Fig Columbia possible throughout the year—it’s small business supporting small business at its finest.

Before logging on to do your online shopping, take a moment to think about gifting and giving with intention. Let’s be a rising tide for the wonderful small businesses that we have here in our community this holiday season. Support small business by shopping with them on Small Business Saturday, by purchasing your gifts during the extended and special hours that they’re offering in December, and by letting them know that you’re grateful they’re here in Columbia. We know we are.
