Giving Back: Brian Craven
WHILE THE HOLIDAYS ARE A TIME FOR DELICIOUS FOOD, giving thanks, and spending time with loved ones, it’s also a time when many families actively search for opportunities to contribute toward the well-being of their communities and lend a hand to those who are less fortunate and may be suffering.
For Columbia-local Brian Craven, Children’s Trust of South Carolina is an important part of how he and his family gives back.
"I became involved with Children’s Trust because right after our oldest child was born, their work, efforts, and impact really resonated with me," explains Brian. "Every child, no matter their circumstances, should have the chance to grow up loved and in a community that cares for them because they are, in fact, children.” Named chair of the board of directors in December 2015, Brian has been a longtime supporter of the work of Children’s Trust. A statewide, nonprofit organization that works with communities and families across South Carolina to combat child abuse and neglect, Children’s Trust is working toward a world where every child knows safety and comfort.
A daunting 18,848 South Carolina children were confirmed as abused or neglected in 2015, leaving the state as one of the lowest ranking in the nation for child wellbeing. A true voice for the voiceless, Children’s Trust works tirelessly to affect change in the lives of our state’s children through funding and supervising prevention programs, training professionals who work directly with affected families, and collaborating with other Midlands organizations aspiring to prevent child abuse.
Extending beyond the substantial work to be done in the homes of South Carolina families, Children’s Trust is proactive in lobbying for meaningful public policy that could serve to improve the lives of children across the state. The nonprofit is also home to Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina, KIDS COUNT South Carolina, and Safe Kids South Carolina.
